COURIER OWNER GUIDE

How to cut failed deliveries and nobody-was-home redeliveries

Failed deliveries are rarely only a driver problem. They usually begin with an unclear address, a missed expectation, a customer problem that was not passed on, or a route that leaves too little time for the stop. The most useful response is a repeatable exception workflow that gives the next person enough context to act.

Capture the reason at the stop

“Nobody was home” is a start, not a complete diagnosis. Ask the driver to record the practical reason: no answer, access problem, incorrect address, customer requested a later time, or another issue. A consistent reason makes it easier to see patterns across routes.

Make the next action visible

Once a delivery fails, assign a next action. The dispatcher may need to call the customer, correct the address, schedule a reattempt, or return the package. A customer problem that sits in a chat thread can disappear between shifts; a visible exception can be owned and closed.

Set expectations before the route

Where the operation already sends automatic email updates to customers, use them to make the delivery window and contact path clear. The message should tell the customer what to do if the timing no longer works. Avoid promising a precise time if the route cannot support it.

Use route planning to protect difficult stops

A multi-driver route with a depot start and return gives the dispatcher a place to make difficult work visible before drivers leave. Put access-sensitive, timed, or high-risk stops where the team can see them. Live driver status can then help the dispatcher distinguish a route that is running normally from a stop that needs intervention.

Review exceptions at closeout

At the end of the day, review failed deliveries alongside the proof of delivery and customer problem tracking. Look for repeat addresses, repeat customers, and repeat route conditions. The point is not to blame a driver; it is to improve the next handoff.
